Pre 2004 Air Conditioning R22 Phase Out
R22 (HCFC) Phase Out
From the beginning of 2015 it became illegal to use R22 refrigerant to maintain or repair air conditioning systems in the UK. That means that if your equipment was installed before 2004 (and so probably uses R22) and breaks down it will not be possible to repair it. You will need to have a new system installed. You might not need to replace all the pipework and wiring but you will definitely need to upgrade your system and make sure it is free from R22 refrigerant.
It makes much more sense to have a scheduled replacement plan than to just wait for your system to fail. Not only does it mean less inconvenience for your organisation, it also means the cost can be spread out rather than all coming at once and unexpectedly at that.
The good news is that modern systems are up to 50% more efficient than older ones and the payback period can be as short as 2 to 3 years.
